"Narration" বা "Speech" সম্পর্কিত ধারণা
"Narration" বা "Speech" সম্পর্কিত ধারণাঃ Narration শব্দটির অর্থ বর্ণনা বা উক্তি Narrate শব্দটি থেকে narration শব্দটির উৎপত্তি।
বক্তার উক্তিকে প্রত্যক্ষ বা পরোক্ষ ভাবে বর্ণনা করার নামই হচ্ছে "narration" বা উক্তি। "narration" এর অন্য নাম হচ্ছে উক্তি। "Narration" -এর অপর নাম হচ্ছে "speech"।
Narration : (উক্তি-বক্তব্য-কথা)
Narration : (উক্তি-বক্তব্য-কথা) : Narration : যে কোন ধরনের উক্তি/বক্তব্য/কথাকে Narration বলে। Narration দুই প্রকার। যথাঃ-
- 1. Direct Narration
- 2. Indirect Narration
Direct and Indirect speech
Direct and Indirect speech: এখন জেনে নিন "Direct Narration" কাকে বলে এবং "Indirect Narration" কাকে বলে।
Direct Narration: একজন বক্তার নিজস্ব কোন বক্তব্য/উক্তি/কথাকে Direct Narration বলে।
Indirect Narration: একজন বক্তার নিজস্ব কোন বক্তব্য/উক্তি/কথাকে যদি অন্য কেউ তার নিজের ভাষায় প্রকাশ করাকে Indirect Narration বলে।
Example:
Direct Narration: He said, "My friend has done this work" ( তিনি বললেন, আমার বন্ধু এই কাজ করেছে। )
Indirect Narration: He said that his friend had done that work. ( তিনি বলেন, তার বন্ধু ওই কাজটি করেছে। )
নোটঃ এইখানে "He said" অর্থাৎ প্রথম অংশটি কে বলা হয় "Reporting Verb" এবং "My friend has done this work" অর্থাৎ পরের বা শেষ অংশটিকে বলা হয় "Reported Speech"।

Direct Narration কে Indirect Narration এ পরিবর্তন করতে হলে নিম্নোক্ত তিন ধরনের পরিবর্তন করতে হয়। যথাঃ-
- 1. Person এর পরিবর্তন।
- 2. Tense এর পরিবর্তন।
- 3. নিকটবর্তী Phrase/ এর পরিবর্তন।
Person পরিবর্তন করার নিয়ম
A. Reported speech এর 1st person (I, my, me, we, our, us, myself, ourselves) Reporting verb এর Subject Number, person Gender অনুসারে পরিবর্তন হয়।
Direct Narration: Mother said to me, "I am reading. ( মা আমাকে বললেন, আমি পড়ছি। )
Indirect Narration: Mother told me that she was reading. ( মা আমাকে বললেন যে সে পড়ছে। )
B. Reported speech এর 2nd person (you, your, yourself, yourselves. ইত্যাদি) Reporting verb এর object এর Number, Persons Gender অনুসারে পরিবর্তন হয়।
Direct Narration: Mother said to me, "You are right." ( মা আমাকে বললেন, তুমি ঠিক বলেছ। )
Indirect Narration: Mother told me that I was right. ( মা আমাকে বললেন আমি ঠিক বলেছি। )
C. Reported Speech 3rd, person (he, his, him, she, her, they, their, them, himself, herself, themselves) পরিবর্তন হবে না।
Direct Narration: He says, "They are students." ( তিনি বলেন, তারা ছাত্র। )
Indirect Narration: He says that they are students. ( তিনি বলেন, তারা ছাত্র। )
Tense পরিবর্তন করার নিয়ম
A. Direct Narration এ Reporting verb Present tense Future tense হয়, তবে Indirect Narration এ পরিবর্তন করার সময় Reported speech এর tense পরিবর্তন হয় না। শুধু Person পরিবর্তন হয়।
B. Reported speech চিরন্তন সত্য (Universal Truth) বা অভ্যাসগত সত্য (habitual fact) হলে Reporting verb, Past Tense হলেও Narration পরিবর্তন করার সময় Reported speech এর verb এর Tense পরিবর্তন হয় না।
C. Reporting verb- এ Past Tense Direct Narration- কে Indirect Narration এ পরিবর্তন করতে হলে Reported speech এর tense পরিবর্তন করতে হয়।
Reported speech এ Present tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Corresponding Past Tense করতে হয়। অর্থাৎঃ-
Present Tense- এ
- Present Indefinite Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Indefinite Tense হয়।
- Present Continuous Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Continuous Tense হয়।
- Present Perfect Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Perfect Tense হয়।
- Present Perfect Continuous Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Perfect Continuous Tense হয়।
Past Tense- এ
- Past Indefinite Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Perfect Tense হয়।
- Past Continuous Tense পরিবর্তন হয়ে Past Perfect Continuous Tense হয়।
- Past Perfect Tense পরিবর্তন হয় না এবং Past Perfect Continuous Tense ও পরিবর্তন হয় না।
Future Tense- এ
- “Shall/Will” পরির্তন হয়ে "Would" হয়।
- “Can” পরিবর্তন হয়ে "Could" হয়।
- “May” পরিবর্তন হয়ে "Might" হয়।
নিকটবর্তী Phrase/Word পরিবর্তন করার নিয়মাবলী
A. Direct Narration কে Indirect Narration-এ পরিবর্তন করতে হলে নিকটবর্তী Phrase/Word কে দূরবর্তী Phrase / Word এ পরিবর্তন করতে হবে। অর্থাৎঃ-
- This পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - That হয়।
- These পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - Those হয়।
- Thus পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - So হয়।
- Now পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - Then হয়।
- Hither পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - Thither হয়।
- Come পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - Go হয়।
- Today পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - That day হয়।
- To night পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - That night হয়।
- Yesterday পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - The previous day হয়।
- Last night পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - The previous night হয়।
- Tomorrow পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - The Next day/the হয়।
- Ago পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - following day হয়।
- It পরিবর্তিত হয়ে - Before হয়।

Must, could, might, should, would পরিবর্তন হয় না। Change of narration in different kinds of sentences.
Asserative
Rules: Asserative Sentences Direct Speech এর Reporting Verb "Say" হলে এবং এর পর Indirect object থাকলে Indirect Narration এ সাধারণত tell ব্যবহার করা হয়। তাই comma বাদ দিয়ে that ব্যবহার করা হয়। তবে Reporting Verb এর পর Indirect object না থাকলে তা হয় না বরং Say এর পরিবর্তে Say- ই ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Example - A
- Direct Narration: He says, "I am happy."
- Indirect Narration: He says that he is happy.
- Direct Narration: I say, "I am right"
- Indirect Narration: I say that I am right.
- Direct Narration: They say, "We are reading books"
- Indirect Narration: They say that they are reading books.
- Direct Narration: You say, "He is honest."
- Indirect Narration: You say that he is honest.
- Direct Narration: You will say, "I am happy."
- Indirect Narration: You will say that you are happy.
- Direct Narration: I shall say to you, "You are right."
- Indirect Narration: I shall tell you that you are right.
Example - B
- Direct Narration: My teacher said, "The earth moves round the sun."
- Indirect Narration: My teacher said that the earth moves round the sun.
- Direct Narration: My father said, "The sun gives us light and heat."
- Indirect Narration: My father said that the sun gives us light and heat.
- Direct Narration: My brother said, "Oil floats on water."
- Indirect Narration: My brother said that oil floats on water.
- Direct Narration: My teacher said, "Honesty is the best policy."
- Indirect Narration: My teacher said that honesty is the best policy.
Example - C
- Direct Narration: He said, "I go to market."
- Indirect Narration: He said that he went to market.
- Direct Narration: They said, "We are going."
- Indirect Narration: They said that they were going.
- Direct Narration: My friend said to me, "I have given you a book."
- Indirect Narration: My friend told me that he had given me a book.
- Direct Narration: He said, "I have been reading for two hours."
- Indirect Narration: He said that he had been reading for two hours.
- Direct Narration: Father said, "I came here."
- Indirect Narration: Father said that he had gone there.
- Direct Narration: Mother said to me, "I was reading the Quran."
- Indirect Narration: Mother told me that she had been reading the Quran.
- Direct Narration: My brother said to me, "I shall be a teacher."
- Indirect Narration: My brother told me that he would be a teacher.
- Direct Narration: My sister said to me, "I shall be reading a book."
- Indirect Narration: My sister told me that she would be reading a book.
- Direct Narration: He said, "Father may come."
- Indirect Narration: He said that father might come.
- Direct Narration: They said to me, "It is time to go."
- Indirect Narration: They told me that it was time to go.
Interrogative
Rules:
A. Interrogative Sentence এ Direct Speech Reporting verb “Say” বাদ দিয়ে ask/ enquire of / demand of ইত্যাদি বসাতে হয়।
B. Auxiliary verb question হলে comma বাদ দিয়ে if/whether বসাতে হয়।
C. WH question হলে comma বাদ দিয়ে WH-word বসাতে হয়।
D. Indirect Narration এ Interrogative sentence টি Assertive Sentence হয়ে যায়।
Example-1
- Direct: He said to me, "Do you like this?"
- Indirect: He asked me if I liked that.
- Or, Indirect : He asked me whether liked that.
- Or, Indirect : He enquired of me if I liked that.
- Or, Indirect : He enquired of me whether I liked that.
- Or, Indirect: He demanded of me if I liked that.
- Or, Indirect : He demanded of me whether I liked that.
Example-2
- Direct: The man said to me, "What is your name?"
- Indirect: The man asked me what my name was.
Imperative Sentence
যে Sentence আদেশ, উপদেশ, অনুরোধ, প্রস্তাব, অনুমতি ইত্যাদি বোঝায় তাকে Imperative sentence বলে।
Rules:
A. Imperative sentence Indirect Narration করতে হলে say বাদ দিয়ে Reported speech at order, request, advise, tell, suggest ইত্যাদি বসাতে হয়।
B. Comma বাদ দিয়ে to বসাতে হয়।
C. Negative imperative হলে not এর পর to বসে।
Example:
- Direct: Father said to me, "Go to school."
- Indirect: Father ordered me to go to school.
- Direct: Father said to me, "Read attentively."
- Indirect : Father advised me to read attentively.
- Direct: The boy said to me, "Please help me."
- Indirect: The boy requested me to help him.
- Direct: The boy said to me, "Help this boy."
- Indirect: The boy said to me to help that boy.
- or, Indirect: The boy told me to help that boy.
- Or, Indirect : The boy asked me to help that boy.
- Direct: Father said to me, "Do not mix with bad boys."
- Indirect: Father advised me not to mix with bad boys.
- Or, Indirect : Father forbade me to mix with bad boys.
- Direct: He said, "Let us walk today."
- Indirect: He proposed that they should walk that day.
- Direct: The boy said to his mother, "Let us play."
- Indirect: The boy asked his mother to let him play.
- Or, Indirect : The boy asked his mother that he might be allowed to play.
- Or, Indirect: The boy asked his mother playing.
Optative Sentence
A. Optative Sentence এর Indirect Narration Reporting verb "Say" পরিবর্তন করে wish, pray ইত্যাদি বসাতে হয়।
B. Comma বাদ দিয়ে that বসাতে হয়।
C. Optative sentence টি Assertive Sentence হয়।
Example:
- Direct: They said, "May our caption live long."
- Indirect: They prayed that their Captain might live long,
- Or, Indirect: They wished that their Captain might live long.
- Direct: My father said to me, "May you prosper in your life."
- Indirect: My father wished me that I might prosper in my life.
- Direct: The old man said to the boy, "May you be happy."
- Indirect: The old man prayed for the boy that he might be happy.
- Direct: My mother said, "May you live long."
- Indirect : My mother wished that I might live long.
- Direct: My friend said to me, "May Allah bless you."
- Indirect : My friend prayed for me that Allah might bless me.
- Direct: Karim's mother said to us, "May Allah help you."
- Indirect: Karim's mother wished us that Allah might help us.
- Direct: The gentle lady said to her children, "May Allah bless you."
- Indirect: The gentle lady prayed for her children that Allah might bless her children.
- Direct: Mother said to you, "May God bless you."
- Indirect : Mother prayed for you that God might bless you.
- Direct: The mother said to her son, "May you pass the examination."
- Indirect: The mother wished her son that he might pass the examination.
- Direct: They said, "Long live our parents."
- Indirect: They wished that their parents might live long.
Exclamatory
Rules:
A. Exclamatory sentence এর Indirect Narration Reporting Verb "Say" পরিবর্তন করে cry out, exclaim, shout ইত্যাদি বসাতে হয়।
B. Interjection এর ভাব দুঃখজনক হলে wish sorrow / with grief, আনন্দজনক হলে with, joy বিস্ময়সূচক হলে with surprise বসিয়ে Interjection বাদ দিতে হয় ।
C. Comma বাদ দিয়ে that বসাতে হয়।
D. Narration পরিবর্তন করার পর sentence টি Assertive হয়ে যায় ।
Example:
- Direct: He said, "Alas! I am undone."
- Indirect: He cried out with sorrow that he was undone.
- Or, Indirect: He exclaimed with sorrow that he was undone.
- Or, Indirect: He shouted with sorrow that he was undone.
- Or, Indirect: He shouted in sorrow that he was undone.
- Direct: The boys said, "Hurruh! We have won the game."
- Indirect : The boys exclaimed in joy that they had won the game.
- Direct: He said, "What a nice bird it is!"
- Indirect: He exclaimed that it was very nice bird.
- Direct: Mother said, "How beautiful the flower it is!"
- Indirect : Mother exclaimed that the flower was very beautiful.
- Or, Indirect: Mother exclaimed in surprise that the flower was very beautiful.
